Nelson family papers, 1861-1973, 1877-1990 (bulk 1861-1936).

Consists of correspondence, military certificates and commissions, political speeches and appointments, photocopies of Nelson's service records, newsclippings and newspaper essays, notes on the Nelson family genealogy, photographs, and memorabilia documenting the military and political careers of W.H. Nelson between 1861 and 1935. The records after 1936 describe Nelson and St. John family activities, their relationship to W.H. Nelson, and the literary activities of James Heaton and Pearl Nelson. An addition to the Nelson family papers consists of correspondence, newsclippings, photographs, and the papers of Elinor Farina, granddaughter of W.H. Nelson.

Soldier, farmer, county court judge and state representative of Tennessee. After a military career both during and after the Civil War, moved to Carter County, Tenn. Member of the Grand Army of the Republic for many years and state commander from 1898 to 1899. Elected to the 53rd Tennessee General Assembly in 1902. Died Feb. 17, 1935.
